Invitation to "Future Trends in Cryptography" event

On October 10th at the EIT Digital Co-Location Centre in Budapest, Hungary, QCI-CAT was invited to the Future Trends in Cryptography event. 

Together with speakers from National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), Ethereum and Zama, who were presenting different highly promising trends in cryptograhy, Karim Osman (AIT) gave a talk providing an overview of quantum-key distribution (QKD) and its current developement and planned implementation within the EU. 

After the event had ended, QCI-CAT interconnected with the Hungarian QCI project QCIHungary and discussed their approaches on reaching the common goal of a EuroQCI.

Panel Invitation on “Shaping the Future of Quantum Computing & Post-Quantum Cryptography”

On October 18-19, within the context of the 5G Techritory Forum in Riga, Latvia, Christoph Striecks (AIT) participated in a panel discussion on “Shaping the Future of Quantum Computing & Post-Quantum Cryptography.” With 1667 participants from 77 countries and 146 speakers, the overall forum gathered experts, academics, as well as lawmakers.

Together with panelists from the Latvia State Radio and Television Center, the NATO CCD COE, the European Space Agency (ESA), and the University of Latvia, Mr. Striecks discussed current developments in quantum-key distribution (QKD) and post-quantum cryptography (PQC), among other topics.

Moreover, Mr. Striecks gave an invited talk on the national project QCI-CAT within the co-creation event “Embracing the Quantum Era” which also took place under the umbrella of the forum.

ARES Conference Secpid 2023

Together with SUNRISE, QCI-CAT co-organized the SECPID workshop at the ARES conference which took place at the Università degli Studi del Sannio-Benevento in Benevento, Italy. Manuela Kos from the AIT chaired the session at the conference and Sebastian Ramacher presented two papers resulting from the work on QCI-CAT.

With this, QCI-CAT received large international attention, which led to numerous fruitful discussions with other QCI interested scientists and enthusiast from different European countries.

Imagine 23

On June, 15th, the team of QCI-CAT represented the project at the Imagine23 event with a strong support of the Austrian Federal Ministry for Climate Action, Environment, Energy, Mobility, Innovation and Technology (BMK), the organizers of this event, and the Austrian Research Promotion Agency. Imagine 23 showcases the outstanding projects and researchers we have in Austria in the field of digital technologies, bringing them to the forefront and fostering networking within the community.

At this meeting, the team had a lot of chances to interconnect and network with collegues throghout different innovative research fields and promote the idea of a Austrian QKD network. The Austrian Institute of Technology – QCI-CATs project coordinator – took this chance to present their self-built QKD links and QKD messaging application.

World of Quantum 2023

From 06/27/2023 – 06/30/2023, World of Quantum 2023 will take place at the Trade Fair Center Messe München in Munich, Germany. Its goal is to give the quantum community a plattform in order to exchange knowledge, to interconnect with their international collegues and to broaden the European quantum network. An elaborate agenda covering numerous topic of quantum information and quantum communication with namely speacher from politics, science and economy is being provided.

QCI-CAT consortium members together with other AIT quantum collegues will attend this meeting together with the Austrian Federal Ministry for Climate Action (BMK), in order to represent the Austrian developments within this field and to promote the QCI-CAT project internationally.

Boost for the Quantum Internet

QCI-CAT partner University of Innsbruck published a paper in which they describe the success of demonstrating a quantum repeater node at telecom wavelengths. This finding has huge potential for realizing the so-called quantum internet and quantum key distribution over long distances (up to 800km, which would allow an entanglement distribution from Vienna to Innsbruck).

The quantum team under the supervision of Ben Lanyon, a theoretical physicist at the Department of Experimental Physics and a close associate to QCI-CAT, will use these results in the QCI-CAT project and hence help to demonstrate a QKD distribution on a pure quantum level.

QKD Demo at the Ministry of Climate

Together with X-Net and the BMK, we succeeded to demonstrate a quantum secure chat between the AIT and the ministry.

On February 23, 2023, the AIT Austrian Institute of Technology and consortium partner X-Net Services GmbH, together with the Federal Ministry for Climate Protection, Environment, Energy, Mobility, Innovation and Technology (BMK), demonstrated the future of highly secure government communication using the world’s most advanced communication and encryption technology. They exchanged messages over a chat app between AIT and BMK, with the data communication encryption being based on quantum-secured cryptography. This technology generates a very large number of highly secure and independent keys, achieving significantly higher security for end-to-end data communication and processing. With the future use of quantum computers, this is an important technology to ensure data sovereignty in Austria and Europe sustainably. This project, “QKD4GOV – Securing Government Data with Quantum-Secure Cryptography,” aims to address the transmission of confidential information between government agencies in various scenarios and is funded by the KIRAS security research program of the BMF.
