Use Cases

The QKD networked deployed as part of QCI-CAT serves as testbed for three use cases: the backup of keys of a Hardware Security Module, secure video conferencing, secure exchange of govermental and medical data.

HSM Backup

In the Hardware Security Module (HSM) backup use case, keys stored in a HSM are transferred using a QKD-protected network to a backup HSM.

In the medical use case, medical data is exchanged securely between the Medical University in Graz and collaborators in Vienna.

Secure Video Links

This use cases implements a federated video conferencing solution which combines key material from both QKD links and post-quantum secure key exchange to protect individual sessions.

This use case implements a secret sharing-based storage solution that is protected with quantum-resistant communication between Austrian ministries.

ABOUT QCI-CAT

Building on the long research experience of Austrian institutions in the field of quantum technologies, the project QCI-CAT aims at an adoption of modern encryption technology based on QKD for highly secure communication between public authorities.

QCI-CAT will investigate and verify new security applications for public authorities, such as secret sharing and message authentication.

Additionally, QCI-CAT will also leverage a research testbed for new technological approaches such as the combination of post-quantum encryption with QKD, long-distance QKD with secured trusted nodes and field trials of quantum repeaters.
